PETALING JAYA: A 34-year-old man has been arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through PJ Old Town here.
Images and videos of the pursuit have been circulating on social media and WhatsApp showing the mans car being driven recklessly with police hot on its tail.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the incident occurred at around 6.40pm on Wednesday (June 2).
“Policemen on patrol in a police car were conducting a check along Jalan 18/16 here when they stopped the car.
“When they attempted to check the vehicle, the suspect sped off and they gave chase,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 3).
He said the suspect drove in a reckless manner and almost hit pedestrians and road users during the pursuit.
“We chased the suspect for about 20 minutes before we stopped the vehicle outside a bank at PJ Old Town.
“When police tried to apprehend the suspect, he refused to cooperate and locked himself in the vehicle even after being ordered to exit,” he said, adding that police had no choice but to smash the car windows to get him out.
He said two policemen suffered injuries to their hands during the arrest and received treatment at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
“We found a tube containing about 0.3g of heroin in the vehicle.
“The suspect also tested positive for morphine following a urine test,” he said, adding that the man had prior records for vehicle theft and drug-related crimes.
ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin said the suspect has been remanded for three days to help with investigations.
