KUALA LUMPUR: Rapper Namewee has surrendered himself to the police on Monday morning in connection with an investigation into his film “Babi”.
Namewee – whose real name is Wee Meng Chee – said in a Facebook post that he arrived at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Monday morning after completing seven days of quarantine.
“This is the eighth time I have taken the initiative to cooperate with the police in an investigation as a musician and filmmaker. One thing I know is that I am Malaysian, I love Malaysia, and I hope Malaysia loves me too,” he said.
At a press conference in Shah Alam, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said that the police will record Namewee’s statement.
“If his statement is sufficient, he might be allowed police bail while awaiting the decision of the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC). We don’t want to needlessly arrest or remand anyone. If his statement is recorded, then he will be allowed bail,” he said
“We don’t want to crowd the police lockups or prison cells as recently there were issues of overcrowding that led to prison or lockup Covid-19 clusters,” added Abdul Hamid.
He added that if the AGC decides that Namewee should be charged, he will be brought to court at the appointed time, the IGP said.
Persatuan Seniman Malaysia (Seniman) had in December lodged a police report against Namewee’s film Babi for allegedly having elements of racism that tarnished Malaysias image.
