Eskom paid a little more than R2bn for accommodation for Kusile workers – including more than R840-million for the uninhabitable Wilge flats and a further R1,3bn to rent flats and homes. Eskom could have saved an estimated R550 million.

A company with links to the wife of former Eskom executive for group capital Abram Masango, Chrestina, was paid R894 million over six years for worker accommodation for the Kusile Power Station project near Delmas, Mpumalanga.
The power utility spent roughly R2 billion between 2012 and 2018 to accommodate thousands of Kusile workers at hostels and guest houses in nearby Emalahleni. This includes roughly R845 million for the construction of the failed Wilge Housing Project – nine blocks of flats meant to house 336 Kusile artisans and save Eskom millions of rands.
Eskom appointed 46 companies which were paid R1,3 billion to house workers between 2012 and 2018 of which Masango-linked Quatra-M Investments was paid the lion’s share of R894 million (68%) for the accommodation of more than 2 000 general workers at three properties in Emalahleni.
