BUTTERWORTH: A civil servant not only had her heart broken, but was cheated of more than RM300,000 of her savings to a love scam syndicate.
North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the 57-year-old civil servant had befriended an individual on Facebook who claimed to be a US citizen working in the oil and gas industry.
“The victim then exchanged phone numbers and communicated through WhatsApp.
“About a month into their ‘relationship’, the suspect started to tell his ‘sad story’ to gain her sympathy,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 31).
ACP Noorzainy said the victim believed in her new love and agreed to assist the man by loaning him money.
ACP Noorzainy said the victim made forty-nine transactions from mid-October last year until the end of December to fourteen bank accounts of several local banks.
He said the victim made the transaction in stages, believing that she would get her money back.
ACP Noorzainy said that the woman realised that she had been duped after the suspect kept asking money.
He advised the public not to fall victim as scammers would resort to various tactics to dupe their victims.
“Police would like to advise the public to always be alert and not easily believe sad stories or sweet promises from unknown individuals through social media,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
